Inleiding

Van de Tracts verschenen per nr. ongeveer 4.500 tot 7.000 exemplaren (zonder de niet-officiële drukken, in Engeland en de Verenigde Staten). Van Tract 90 werden er 14.500 verkocht. Vanaf 1834 verschenen er ook gebundelde uitgaven. De eerste 66 voor eind 1835 zijn van andere toon, toen dreigde een constitutionele crisis. Daarna (na de Hampden-affaire) is de situatie anders en richt men zich meer tegen de Evangelische theologie. En vanaf 1836 gaan zij meer de katholieke devotionele praktijken behandelen en veranderen zij in uitgebreide traktaten. Vanaf Tract 71 staat de uiteenzetting met Rome centraal.
Het laatste Tract is Tract 90 op 27 februari 1841.

Overzicht

Newman schreef de nummers 1-3, 6-8, 10-11, 15, 19-21, 31, 33-34, 38, 41, 45, 47, 71, 73-76, 79, 82-83, 85, 88, en 90. Dit is 33% van het geheel ofwel 30 van de 90. Hij was ook medeauteur en corrector van heel wat van de overige.
Men denkt dat Newman bij het schrijven van 1-3 en 6-8 geholpen werd door Hurrell Froude; bij 10-11 en 15 door Sir William Palmer en bij de nummers tussen 19 en 74 door Benjamin Harrison. De andere schreef hij alleen.
Elf Tracts zijn heruitgaven van werk van Thomas Wilson (1663-1715): 37.39,42,44,46,48,50,53,55,62,65.
Als men deze van de 90 gepubliceerde Tracts aftrekt dan blijkt het aandeel van Newman in het originele werk van de Tracts nog groter nl. bijna 38% of 30 van de 79.
